What is the consensus on using synthetic oil in the Ex?

My next oil change will be this April so I would like some feedback from those who have made the switch.

I use the Rotella Synthetic especially in winter. Once in a while I will swap out a gallon of Synthetic for the regular rotella. But in winter I run straight Synthetic.

I look at it this way. Sure the Synthetic is more $$ but its still around the cost of a fillup and it lasts 5000 miles. I don't know how much better it is in reducing friction but I do know it blows away dino oil with temp extremes. When its 10 degrees out the Synthetic is still flowing.

Just my thoughts.

I'd rather be in the boat with a drink on the rocks then in the drink with the boat on the rocks.... But either way theres gonna be a good story!!!

I run Amsoil 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel synthetic oil for the last 140,000 miles. I change filters every 5,000-7,500 miles and change oil every 10,000-12,000 miles. I also use Amsoil oil filters, too.

I've been using Chevron Delo Synthetic 5W40 since I got my Ex. I switched to synthetic almost 10 years ago when I was doing a lot of highway driving in my Jetta TDI. Less blow by and consumed less oil at highway speeds. I have the peace of mind knowing I will have the oil flowing a little easier in the winter and less high temp degradation or breakdown in the summer.

I run the Rotella year round. I change it myself and I buy the oil and filter from Walmart. About $70-80 for the oil and the motorcraft filter. I have noticed the price fluctuates a bit. I figured changing it every 5k-6k miles, it is worth the invesment in the syntehic.
Speaking of oil, anyone use a oil filter wrench that grabs the oil filter on the end and then you connect a socket wrench to it? I can't find one large enough for the filter, and I am tired of scraping my knuckles when using the traditional wrench that wraps around the filter.

Bought one at NAPA a few years ago that fits 1/2" ratchet. Works great and have had no problems.

If you don't crank the filter on tight you should be able to remove it by hand after 5000 miles. I run my filter on till the gasket touches then give it another 1/2 turn. I have never had it fall off or leak and all it takes is my hand to loosen it. Now anytime I help a buddy out that had a quick lube place do the oil changes before I can barely get the filter off using any method known. I think the quick lubes put them on with an impact wrench

Have been running Rotela Syn. in the X from 130K-171K miles and change oil every 15-20K miles. The F250 has had conventional oil every 8-10K miles, 236K miles.

The Excursion is total syn. and the F250 is except the motor which I'm just going to stick with the conventional oi.
