Ken,
The forums don't start with a "www" because the SuperFord.org server looks at the first part of the URL and redirects you based on the word that's in place of "www". If you go to www.superford.org, you get the SuperFord.org home page. If you go to cvn.superford.org you get the CrownVic.net vehicle registry. If you go to fordexcursions.superford.org/forums you get the FordExcursions.com forums.
Websites don't have to have a "www" in front of them in order for them to work -- it's simply just a hostname that points to an IP address. All computers on the Internet have an IP address, the hostnames (i.e. www.superford.org or fordexcursions.superford.org) are just names for us dumb humans to remember. It's then up to the webserver to redirect you to the appropriate home page based on the hostname you enter. Without hostnames, you'd have to remember an IP address like this: http://209.240.85.10/ which is really annoying!
It's a two part answer...not sure which part of the answer you were looking for so hopefully I covered it well enought o answer your question!
