Guys,

I haven't changed the oil in a car since 1999 with my '87 mustang. I used to do all the oil changes. Is it as simple, aside from the quantity that is, to change the oil of an Excursion? I do have a 7.3L diesel and a 4 inch lift.

Also, when I took it in in June to have the oil changed Ford said they had no synthetic oil for the 7.3L. Of course my bullshit meter went off but I didn't want to get in the guys face over it. So if they don't want to do it I guess I will.

So where do I get Ford approved synthetic oil? Do I use a special oil filter for it? Also do the oil filters come off an easy as they did in a 5.0 Mustang? PH-8A if I remember.

How often do you change your oil by the way?

You can use Shell Rotella 5W40. Yes, Ford has no recommended oil for it besides what they pump out. So what? The sun does not rise and set on the Ford emblem. I'd go to a Jiffy Lube, WATCH THEM LIKE A HAWK and bring your own stuff

I change about 3000-5000 depending on use

01 Excursion. Gauges with AIH Delete, AIS Air Filter system, CCV Mod, 4' MBRP, BTS Trans, 6.0L Trans Cooler and Intercooler, DP-Tuner F6 chip, ITP In Tank Mod and Boost Annihilator, Diesel Innovation's Regulated Fuel kit, BTS Big Oil system, GTP38R Turbo with 1.15 A/R housing and BDP Stage II AC injectors. Bilstein Shocks with U code front and A code Rear. Billet thermostat housing

I've been to Jiffy Lube as well, they use Rotella, if I remember right, and just charge for the extra 10 quarts. I make it out of there for under $70. Not bad considering the cost of 4 gal's of oil and a filter is $50 at the auto parts store. I change mine at the recommended 5K mile interval. Personally I can't justify synthetic if I'm changing it every 5K miles.

Good luck,
Shannon

I just changed to synthetic (Shell Rotella T 5W40) and I am finding like many other folks on the other Ford Diesel sites that the truck runs better. It has been running cooler, quiter and it has better response.

I picked it up for under $50 for four gallon bottles at Wallmart.

i have been running rotella sb 5w-40 syn blend since new. just bought the last 56 gallons from my distributor for under $6 a gallon. that should cover me for another 140K miles. i have 145K on my X now with great blackstone reports and 17 mpgs IN TOWN making delivery stops. BTW, Mystic makes a 15W-40 Syn Blend available at Tractor Supply for $20 2 gallon jugs. Mystic grease and lubes are very well respected in heavy machinery industries.

I run AMSOIL synthetic oil 5W-40 (called "Heavy Duty Diesel Oil"). Switched over to it at 5K miles and now have 184,000 miles on my PSD. I swap filters every 5K and swap oil every 10K.

Get a Fumuto Valve http://www.quickoildrainvalve.com to make your oil changing easier and less messy. I have one on mine. With a 4" lift on your X, you'll have plenty of room to change the oil.
