Mine seem to not stay locked in!
And this really is not good wiht icey cnow packed roads
I do not drive this truck all that much, mostly for boat towing
They lock in right, no real lag time to speak of.
However there is really no set time or reason they unlock
Sometimes its at a stop sign, other times its just going down the road
All I need to do is turn the switch off and then back on and all is well. That is until they unlock again!!
This all happens realitivly soon after flipping the switch. Sometimes in less then a minute, but never last more then a few minutes.
Speed does not have an issue either. It happens driving around a few blocks nad it happens at highway speeds as well.
Any insight would be greatly welcomed and wanted, as I am suppose to be heading north today Also, could someone tell me the markings for auto and manual placement?
After looking at them, they are both in the same position and they do both lock in when first engaged, but there is no markings on them anymore to turn to manual?

No hands-on experience, but I will speculate that you're losing vacuum to the hubs. You might have a leak that opens during movement, but is closed at the time when you turn the switch ... possibly a cracked hose ... plastic gets awfully brittle in the cold. |

The hubs work on vacumme. Assuming the hub seals are not leaking. You need to inspect the vacume line on each hub, a top. Its a rubber hose. When they get old they tyical crack on the hose bard fitting. You can trim the bad section back and just put the line back on. If that checks out, youir hub seals are probably bad. The parts are inexpensive but its ALOT of work to change them out. Also, another good idication you have a leak is that your heating control will do to the deforst mode / windshield. Then say after a couple of mins your vents start to work normal. This is a hub leak. You can also hear the little vacume pump running and it will never shit off ! Best thing to do is just lock the hubs by turning them. Then you can just flip the dash switch and your 4 wheel drive will work. If it were me, I;d cap off the dang vac lines to the hubs, toss out the OEM hubs, and just get a a set of warn manual hubs (http://www.gowarn.com/hubs.asp). I cant tell you how many times my hub seals have failed in the last 200K. I gave up on that auto vac system 4x4. Its just a poor design if you ask me. Plus changing the hub locks is very simple. There is also a silinoid on the passanger side fender just be hind the battery that has an electrical connection with vaccume lines going into it. I cant think off the top of my head what its called. But they look fine from the out side but the slit and crack from the heat. this is part of the electical silinoid that tells the hubs when to engage and dissengage. It was around 50 bucks form ford. That part initself can have a huge impact on how the system works. Oh, clockwise to lock hubs. |
