Looking for input on a 4" exhaust system. Currently have the hypertech chip, which is great. Want to convert the existing exhaust to a dual 4"... but, while I would love a loud system while idling, I don't want a 'monster' exhaust sound. Main objective here is to get to a 4" dual to give the engine some more air and increase MPG/power. Spend lots of time doing 75 mph with kids watching movies or me talking on the bluetooth. Therefore, do NOT want a performance exhaust muffler.
My challenge is that most kits (I think!) are available to do this, but they will increase the dB level significantly.
Also, have thought many times about putting in a system with an exhaust cutout vavlve to give me true open exhaust when out mudding/pulling/whatever. http://www.dmhperformance.com/
First, does anyone have any cutouts on their X?
Second, can anyone recommend a good 4" dual exhaust stainless system that is quiet! Then I add the cutouts for when I want to open it up?
Thanks, Cory |

I have a Magnaflow 4" exhaust on my '00 Excursion. It's much quieter than the 5" Hypermax exhaust I ran a few years back. You won't need dual 4" exhaust on your X because there wouldn't be substantial performance gain, plus running dual 4" exhaust underneath your vehicle will create some challenges for clearance of the pipe with a rear sway bar and suspension. It's pretty tight with the 4" pipe I have now existing out just one side of the X.
Also, I wouldn't recommend cut-outs because it doesn't sound like a V8 gas engine does with cutouts. My 5" Hypermax exhaust was completely straight-through and there is a very pronounced turbo fluttering sound which, to me, is an extremely acquired taste that only certain diesel enthusiasts can appreciate. Cutouts will basically make your Excursion sound like a small semi, not a big block V8 gasoline engine.
Good luck!
