Just bought a 2000 Excursion XLT 2x4 with 38K on the clock. Primary use will be towing my boat (21 foot - I know, there won't be a problem with this vehicle!) as well as hauling kids, camping gear, etc.
Any advice on upcoming maintenance is always appreciated! |

Welcome and congrats!
Just curious, what did you pay?
Check your roof rack cross bars. Remove the cross bars unless you plan to use it often. Otherwise you run the risk of them scratching off the paint on the roof.
If you plan to use it often, look into some type of self-adhesive cloth/felt (I used the soft side of Velco from Wal-Mart) and put it on the cross bars where they contact the roof.

that's good advice on the roof rack, I saw the same thing on mine. I just purchased mine a couple months ago, it's a 2000 LTD with 35k miles. Definately do the shocks asap, I went with the rancho adjustable's. Also, make sure you (or a qualified mechanic) checks the torque on your spark plugs (I didn't check which engine you have, but if you have the v10 defintely do this immediately). There is apparently a problem with the plugs coming loose and blowing out - taking a coil with them. I found this out the hard way, and ken can verify that this is a problem. Also, Check your tires. There are lots of problems with the Firestone Steeltex and the sidewalls coming off. My X is at the tire shop today having them replaced (under warranty!!), this was no small task but I was lucky enough to find a real nice guy at the local Firestone shop who agreed to do a warrany replacement with better/larger/NEW tires. Lastly, you should make sure your X had it's 30k service done, and if you can't verify this thru records etc. (via a Ford Dealers computer), you should have basics checked out with regard to tranny fluids, coolant fluids and brakes (all of which are checked/serviced at 30k miles). I had to have my front brakes turned down right after I purchased my X because there was some 'pulsating' which is apparently quite normal on these heavy beasts, and can happen as often as every 20-30k miles, so have your brakes checked out. Other than that, this forum is a fantastic place to find/ask anything. I was reading these discussions BEFORE I bought my X, and they were a huge help in my shopping for the right vehicle. Good luck!

Thanks to all who've responded to my "just bought it" post. I paid $18K w/ the leather package, alloy wheels, V-10, etc. I do have the firestone Steeltex which I 'm guessing should be replaced. I don't know about the 30K service and I 'm guessing a should also have those plugs looked at - is this a DIY job?
Thanks again for all the responses...oh, here's one - is there a stereo up grade? Mine has the 6 disc player in the center console which works great however I'd like to get some small tweeters up at ear level...justa thought |

| WHY? Are they the A/Ts or the R4SII? I'm on my second set of R4SII. I have no complaints. Others do though, I guess but I think it is more geared to the A/T's. Up to you...

Plugs...well if you got time to check. Set aside an afternoon. There are a lot of plugs. Make sure that if you plan on removing them that you have an air compressor handy to blow the holes out BEFORE you remove them. Dem holes are Deeeeeeeeeeeep!.

You can add some tweeters somewhere, I guess. That's not my thing.

Hey Monsta,
I have the R42's...are these problematic? They appear to be in fine shape, plenty of tread left - no outward sign of delamination or imperfections - I do recall some issues with Firestone tires and SUV's - this was obviously long before I had my X so I didn't pay too much attention.... |

I've had Firestone Steeltex's on my X for all 78,000 miles. I've replaced 3 of the tires but one is still an original with 78K miles. I swear by BFG All Terrains and will probably purchase those when these tires wear out, but these are the longest lasting tire I've ever owned. BFG AT's will never last this long, but that's the price you pay for cool looks and an all terrain tread.

Hey Eric,
Thanks for the response, you just saved me several $'s - I was on my way out the door to get a new set of tires - safety is HIGH on my list of things I do for my family and others and I surely would not like to be the one driving around in something like an X with tires that are unsafe.
If you're in Annapolis (home of the Nasal Cavity), stop by for a cool one... |
