Folks,

Anyone running Amsoil synthetic automatic transmission fluid?

http://intershop.amsoil.com/cgi-bin/Amsoil.storefront/3eb9c8b103fbce08271bd1f0e3f00709/Catalog/1175

Is this what you run?

This is a hot debate, especially from the AMSoil crowd...

AMSoil's fluid is dual rated ("Ford Mercon, Mercon V"). You should not use dual-rated fluid in your 4R100. Only fluid that is Mercon V only.

Yeah, I read about that which is why I'm hesitant to go the Amsoil route. Have you heard what other folks are running for synthetic fluid?

Yes, Mobil 1 makes a synthetic transmission fluid. Several people that are using it have posted with positive results.

Monsta,i dont think our Xs take Mercon V,that stuff is very slippery.my book says Mercon.you are correct about dual purpose fluids, they dont work.they can cause big time damage.our torque converters(they suck pretty bad)are rated at 5 to 8 % over what the engine will normaly demand.(this aint towing big loads guys)if you put wrong fluid in(mainly slippery stuff)torque converter clutch will be the first unit to fail.(remember it sucks to begin with)Mobil 1 has both the Mercon and Dexron ratings(safest synthetic out there)Amsoil is by far the best oil out there, their boiling point is well above anybodys.but,i am hesitant about their rating on trans fluid.you are safer using a less slippery fluid(usually will give you harsh engagement and upshifts)in the wrong place than using slippery fluid where it does not belong.at this point i do not recommend Amsoil atf till i test it.Mobil 1 is still the best IMHO.in my shop we are using Texaco(dexron mercon blend)it is very good.

Eric
dont waste money on fluid change till i get the converter(soon)i will call you tomorrow

10-4 Mike, just trying to plan ahead. Synthetic tranny fluid won't be cheap, judging by the Amsoil prices. I still need to buy more toys for the Galaxie, too.

I'm not an expert on how trannies are supposed to act with different fluids in them but I've had good experience with the Amsoil synthetic. The shifts aren't harsh, they're all solid transitions and I haven't had any problems at all with it. No hot smells coming from it, no burnt fluid, no consumption of fluid etc etc. Overall just good experiences.

Here's the catch...I haven't been running it for a long time. It's got just over 12,000 miles now. Still, we towed a 4000 lb trailer cross country (Florida to Idaho) back in January and didn't have a single problem.

Just my .02

The 4R100 in our X's takes Mercon.
