On our trip to the coast this weekend, I heard a high pitched sound when the X was moving slowly. It was not the brakes(didn't change when pedal was depressed), and I don't think it was the Tranny(coasting in Neutral, and D, 1, & 2 noise still there). It sounded like a vacuum noise perhaps. Any ideas??? The weird thing is then my wife took it down the freeway to go shopping, when she came back the noise was gone??? Just thought I'd ask and see if anyone had any ideas what to check.

Was the noise coming from the engine compartment..? Did you open the hood to take a listen?

Couldn't open the hood to listen, when I was not in motion there was no noise. Just sitting and idling, no noise...start moving and there it is. It has not returned since my wife drove it, I was just hoping to get some ideas to check before it came back.

Did you get a general sense from where it was coming from? Front or rear of the vehicle? I'm not sure what type of road you were driving on, perhaps something got caught between the rotor and your wheel and it was dragging/scraping and making the noise?

Hard to diagnose this one...

From what I could tell, it was coming from the front. Just driving on a paved parking lot, and freeway. It could have been something like that. Oh well I will just wait and see if the noise returns. If so, I'll pay closer attention. Thanks for the help.

Wheels... I just ran across your post, I had the same issue. The sound starts when I go into 4x4 and then for a bit after going back to 4x2. I took if to the dealer and they claimed it was some dust in the wheel bearings. I call BS. My warranty still has 55K miles on it I will address it a bit later. Just wanted you to know you were not the only one!!!!!

Thanks David, I am going to have the 100k service done in the next couple of months (about 97k right now) At that time I am also going to go to ART brakes and have bearing repacked/replaced whatever. I have not noticed this noise in quite some time, but am still listening for it. Thanks for the info.
