Once out the spring is helpless to your will. I stretched the spring apart to put some life/spring back into it. It goes back into the plastic even more easily than it came out.

Scored this stacked plate 11" X 7" X 1 1/2" transmission cooler off a one ton van for $20.00 Canadian. It's an exact duplicate of my B&M Supercooler, which cost almost 6 times that.

Here's the upper socket that pushes onto the ball stud. The shiny spring is supposed to keep pressure on the ball and keep it from jumping out/off the stud.

Here's the backview of the socket. In theory you're meant to deperss the spring with your thumbnail and allow the other side to click onto the ball stud.

We saved the two headpipes, with pre-cats and cats, intact. Didn't even break the air pipe nipples. These headpipes are seriously expensive so I won't be throwing them out just yet.

Like anything set into plastic, the metal spring has a detent to allow removal of the spring. I used a tiny screwdriver to depress the tang/detent and the spring pushed out no trouble.

Two 3/8" mounting bracket bolts, three air pump hose clamps and two vacuum hoses disconnected and this air pump diverter valve will actually come out.

There's the new Ford PCV valve grommet. Pricey, but the old one was incredibly brittle and kept coming out with the PCV.

This is supposedly the "good" header type 1990 manifolds on this Lincoln. Figure the aftermarket can improve on this no fear.

I figure after 16 years of hard use I'd spring for a new oil strainer. Also it's apparently often a cause of an emissions test failure, if it's saturated (and it was).

When the welds cooled down enough I cleaned them up with a wire brush. Then I nailed them with Plasticote's 1500 degree exhaust paint to postpone corrosion for a while. That stuff is dry in 6 minutes !
