Hello,..I bought my '66 Fairlane GT about 6 years ago,it was "supposed" to be all "orginal" number matching car...But after getting it home and checking numbers i learned the engine isn't right for the car....So I got a couple of books and got numbers and found out it has a 428cj intake on it,...in fact all of the numbers I can find say it's a '68 motor....after posting the numbers on another forum i came to the conclusion that i had a 390 that was put together with what ever they apparently had!(who ever did it..not the previous owner)...
Then a couple of weeks ago,I was at a cruise night and a couple of guys were look'in at my car, they asked if it had a 390 in it? I said yeah....I think so.....opened the hood and showed them the engine and explained the "story" about what I knew...The one guy who apparently "knew" FE's pointed out a few things that he saw, and said it had every indication it was a 428...at least on the outside...
Here's what I know ...and what he said.( this is the 1st time anyone "who knows FE's" has seen my engine)
The intake is a 428cj, the heads are C8AE-H ( which could be anything from 360 to 42
The exhaust manifolds I thought were 428 are 390 GT manifolds...but they don't match up with the heads? (extra bolt holes in the head)
It has chrome "powered by Ford" valve covers, I found the date casting # on the block which de-coded says it was cast on Jan. 12th 1969...All the numbers I can find are for a '68...can not find a casting number on the block..just the date casting number...I did measure the stroke by removing a spark plug and using a wooden dowel....but i don't have a socket big enough for the flywheel so turned it by hand as far as i could each way and came up with a measurement inbetween a 390 and a 428 stroke.( was wondering if i got the piston all the way up/down?)
This guy also said the alt. was mounted low? 390 were high? and that there is room for 3 fan belts? ( I figured power steering and air?..which I don't have)
I know that some 428's didn't have any casting numbers on the blocks....is that true for 390's also?? I had given up on figuring it out a couple of years ago. until i pulled the motor and re-built it.....but this guy has me wondering again!.....
Any input/ anything this guy saw that makes any sense?
Or do i just have to wait until I pull it apart to find out what I have?
Thanks in advance

Mike,

The FE seems to be a mysterious beast. Try posting the above post in the forums at fordfe.com and you're bound to get an answer. Tons of FE experts over there.
