bronco alternator upgrade

My alternator is on its last leg, and my audio system is killing it. I have a 1F cap to try to relieve some of the stress on the alternator but it is not happening. Does anyone know of a replacement that is over the stock on, like 150amps or so.

I installed an AIS Alternator in my Bronco when I needed a replacement.

Their site is at http://www.alternator-ais.com. Ask about their 200 amp alternator that is a direct bolt-in on Broncos. It should run you a couple hundred dollars.

I do not have a suggestion for an upgraded alternator, however, I can offer some words of caution. When my stock alt was on its last leg I replaced it with a 140 amp PowerMaster. Last week, instead of getting my third PowerMaster alt in 10 months, I got store credit and will look for a different type of replacement.

One of the cheapest and best ways to increase charge is to make the cables running directly from the alternator to the battery, this will eliminate all undirect powerloss.

I had a similar problem with a '86 302 FS bronco. What I did was to replace the OEM Alternator with a standard replacement from a Lincoln Continental 1990. Changing the idler wheel from a serpentine to belt the unit was a drop in (mechanically). I did however install an external voltage regulator for the install. The alternators from the Lincoln puts out a minimum of 125 Amp at 2500 R/m easily. I also changed the battery type up to a Sears "Die Hard", Schedule 42 A battery. These are the type with the handles on each end. The CCA of these batteries are 1200 minimum. The combination solved most of my electrical problems. They were very cost effective in they did not need special parts, or mountings.
There is a special alternator for Ford Trucks that is the Leese-Nevil Type which puts out about 165 Amp at 2500 R/m, but requires a seperate mounting kit. The Leese Nevil is available from Ford Parts Dealers as it was a option on some Ford Trucks several years ago.

I read an article on the tech pages of mybigbronco.com about installing the 3g stock 130amp alt from a 95 mustang on a fullsize bronco. The bolt pattern is the same, you just have to grind a little on the brackets and change out a wire to a larger gauge. I'm planning on doing that this summer myself, anyone else ever heard of this swap???? Hope it helps----

Yeah, it sucks. The 3Gs don't put out anywhere near their rated 130A, they're internally regulated, have small front bearings, and tend to heat up when spun slow due to the small internal fan.

Save yourself the time and heartache and swap a Ford large case alt. You can find brackets on Ford chassis vans to do the swap. Mine puts out roughly 80A at idle, and 108A wide open. It's easily modified to get +150A as well.
