t case problems?

88 Eddie bauer bronco with np208 manual shift t-case. I lock my hubs and shift into what should be 4hi and nothing happens. The front end has recently been overhauled. the drive shaft spins by hand and I can hear it turning fluid in the t-case. Also the shift moves the linklage but there is nop obvious stop at what should be 4hi, neutral and 4lo.

If the frontend was recently overhauled I would look there for troubleshooting purposes. If the front driveshaft is spinning when you are in gear and 4-wheel drive is engaged then your transfer case is fine.

Work your way from the outside in -- were the hubs not reassembled correctly? Are the axles in the frontend? Believe it or not, I had frontend work done on my Bronco and they forgot to hook up the axle shafts. The dana 44 on the frontend of your '88 Bronco will have openings where you can see the axle shafts. Just have a peak and see if they are there and "hooked up."

My guess is that the hubs were not reassembled correctly. If you had the frontend work done by a mechanic bring it back to him and tell him to take another try at it.

The hubs are installed corectly and the axle shafts are in. The driveshaft only spins when the hubs are locked and the vehicle is rolling. The reason I think it is the tcase or the shift fork maybe is because you can't even feel or hear the tcase engage when the shifter is moved.

OK, then I completely misinterpreted your message.

Yes, if the hubs are locked and the driveshaft spins, your frontend is fine. The transfer case is the problem. What about 4-low? Does that engage?

No four lo either. There isn't even any difference as far as shifting goes whether or not the tranny is in neutral.

Your 208 will have the shift lever on the side, just to the inside of the front output yoke. Check and make sure your linkage is connected correctly, it's only a bar with a grommet in it. Goes over a barbbed shaft to connect up. Try shifting it by hand and see if you 'feel' the detents when it engages. If all the linkage is assembled and the shifter arm at the case is moving freely, you've got problems in the case.

I'm doubting that. They don't usually fail like that, it's usually catastrophic...

My bet's on the linkage.
