During the 1975-1981 model years the Mercury Grand Marquis was the top trim level of the full-size Mercury Marquis rather than a standalone model. The full-size Marquis line used body-on-frame construction with V8 power, and it was downsized onto Ford's new Panther platform for the 1979 model year. The Grand Marquis badge designated the most heavily equipped pillared and hardtop sedans in the range before it became a distinct model in 1983.

Parents bought this brand new in 1978,been driving mostly to Tennessee to visit my Grandmother and Grandfather,my Fathers parents. This has been covered for a while,10+ years.. — baconater357
