Mercury Grand Marquis: History, Generations & Specs

The Mercury Grand Marquis is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame car from Ford's Mercury division, sold as a four-door sedan and, through 1991, as the Grand Marquis Colony Park station wagon. The name began in 1975 as the top trim of the Mercury Marquis and became a standalone Mercury model for 1983. From 1979 it rode the Ford Panther platform, which it kept through the end of production in January 2011, when the final car was built at the St. Thomas Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. It spans four generations, is the Mercury sibling of the Ford LTD Crown Victoria and later Ford Crown Victoria, and shares its chassis and much of its running gear with the Lincoln Town Car.

The Mercury Grand Marquis is Mercury's full-size sedan, built on a rear-wheel-drive, body-on-frame chassis. It shares the Ford Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria and Ford Crown Victoria, and with the Lincoln Town Car. The name originated as a Marquis trim in 1975, became a distinct model in 1983, and stayed in production through January 2011.

Marquis trim era (1975-1982)

The Grand Marquis name debuted for 1975 as the top trim of the full-size Mercury Marquis rather than a separate model. Through 1978 these trim-era cars used Ford's full-size chassis; for 1979 the full-size Mercury moved to the downsized Ford Panther platform, shedding significant weight and exterior size while keeping body-on-frame construction and rear-wheel drive. Powertrains in this era centered on Ford small-block and 351 V8 engines paired with automatic transmissions.

Box Panther era (1983-1991)

For 1983 the Grand Marquis became a standalone Mercury model, offered as a four-door sedan and (through the mid/late 1980s) a Colony Park station wagon variant of the line. These squared-off "box" Panther cars used the 5.0L (302 cu in) V8; a 5.8L (351 cu in) V8 was available in some applications. The 5.0L V8 gained sequential electronic fuel injection during the 1980s, and a four-speed AOD automatic was the standard transmission.

Aero Panther era (1992-1997)

The 1992 redesign gave the Grand Marquis rounded "aero" bodywork while retaining the Panther platform, body-on-frame layout, and rear-wheel drive. This generation introduced the 4.6L (281 cu in) modular SOHC V8 with two valves per cylinder, replacing the pushrod 5.0L. It was paired with the four-speed 4R70W automatic. Trim levels were marketed as GS and LS.

Updated Aero Panther era (1998-2011)

A 1998 update revised the exterior of the final-generation cars and, more significantly, moved the chassis to a stiffer frame with rack-and-pinion steering and revised rear suspension in the following years. The 4.6L SOHC V8 continued, generally rated around 200-239 horsepower depending on year and exhaust configuration. Mercury Grand Marquis production ended in January 2011, with the final cars built alongside the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car at the St. Thomas Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada.

Asked all the time

What engine does the Mercury Grand Marquis use?

Early Grand Marquis models (through 1991) used Ford pushrod V8s, primarily the 5.0L (302 cu in) V8, with a 5.8L (351 cu in) Windsor V8 available on some later box-Panther cars. From the 1992 redesign onward, every Grand Marquis used the 4.6L (281 cu in) modular SOHC V8 with two valves per cylinder, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Is the Grand Marquis rear-wheel drive with a solid rear axle?

Yes. Across its entire run the Mercury Grand Marquis was rear-wheel drive with body-on-frame construction and a live (solid) rear axle, on the Ford Panther platform from 1979 onward (a Watt's linkage was added to locate the axle from 1998). It was never offered with front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

How does the Grand Marquis differ from the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car?

All three share the Panther platform and the 4.6L V8 in their later years. The Grand Marquis and Ford Crown Victoria (earlier Ford LTD Crown Victoria) are near-identical siblings differing mainly in trim, badging, and front/rear styling. The Lincoln Town Car sits above both, using a longer wheelbase and a more upscale interior and equipment level.

Which model years should a buyer look for?

The 1998-2011 cars are the most modern, with the updated 4.6L V8 and, from 2003, a stiffer hydroformed frame, rack-and-pinion steering, and revised suspension. The 1992-1997 aero generation introduced the 4.6L V8. Pre-1992 box-Panther cars use the older 5.0L pushrod V8 and squared-off styling.

When did the Mercury Grand Marquis stop being made?

The final Grand Marquis was built on January 4, 2011 at Ford's St. Thomas Assembly plant in Ontario, Canada. The related Lincoln Town Car and Ford Crown Victoria were built at the same plant but ran longer, with the last Town Car in August 2011 and the last Crown Victoria in September 2011.

Was the Grand Marquis ever offered as a station wagon?

Yes. From 1983 through 1991 the full-size Mercury wagon was sold as the Grand Marquis Colony Park, the wagon counterpart to the Grand Marquis sedan. With the 1992 aero redesign the wagon was dropped and the Grand Marquis was sold only as a four-door sedan.
