The 1983 BMW 5 Series was in its second United States model year on the E28 platform, which had replaced the E12-based 5 Series for 1982. The 528e continued as the volume model, its 2.7-liter M20 eta six tuned for low-rpm torque and rated at 121 horsepower. For 1983 BMW added the 533i, the first US E28 to carry the 3.2-liter M30 big six, rated at 181 horsepower.
