Chrysler Newport

1979 Chrysler Newport Specs & Photos

The 1979 Chrysler Newport moved to the new downsized R-body platform, replacing the larger 1978 C-body car and sharing its architecture with the Chrysler New Yorker and the Dodge St. Regis. Offered as a four-door sedan, it came standard with the 225 cubic inch (3.7L) Slant Six rated at 110 net horsepower, with an optional 318 (5.2L) V8 at 135 hp and a 360 (5.9L) V8 in 150 hp two-barrel and 195 hp four-barrel forms. All engines paired with the TorqueFlite three-speed automatic, and the 400 and 440 big-block V8s of the prior generation were dropped as part of this downsizing.
