Jeep Cherokee: History, Generations & Specs

The Jeep Cherokee is a sport utility nameplate sold in the United States across three distinct generations and three completely different vehicles: the full-size SJ Cherokee (1974-1983) derived from the Wagoneer, the compact unibody XJ Cherokee (1984-2001), and the transverse-engine KL Cherokee crossover (2014-2023). The XJ, built for 18 model years with the 4.0L inline six from 1987 on, is the version most owners mean when they say Cherokee. The Liberty of 2002-2012 carried the Cherokee name only in overseas markets and is a separate model. US production ended in 2023 when the Belvidere, Illinois plant was idled.

GenerationYearsWhy it matters
1974-1983 Cherokee SJ (Full-Size)1974-1983A sportier two-door take on the SJ Wagoneer with AMC sixes and V8s up to 401 cubic inches; the wide-fender Cherokee Chief is the one to look for.
1984-2001 Cherokee XJ1984-2001The light unibody that cut roughly 1,200 pounds against the SJ while keeping solid axles and low-range four wheel drive; the 4.0L inline six arrived for 1987.
2014-2023 Cherokee KL2014-2023The nameplate's return as a transverse-engine crossover with independent suspension and a nine-speed automatic; the Trailhawk kept real trail hardware.

Jeep first used the Cherokee name in 1974 on a two-door version of the full-size Wagoneer platform. The name then moved to an all-new compact unibody in 1984, sat out the North American market from 2002 through 2013 while the Liberty filled the slot, and returned on a car-based crossover for 2014. Three eras, three completely different vehicles, one badge.

SJ Cherokee (1974-1983): the full-size original

The first Cherokee, the 1974-1983 SJ, was a sportier take on the SJ Wagoneer, launched for 1974 as a two-door only, with a four-door added for 1977. Engines were AMC sixes and V8s, including the 258 inline six and 360 and 401 cubic inch V8s, all rated in net horsepower. The wide-fender Cherokee Chief package, introduced for 1976, is the one to look for in this era. Production ended after 1983 to clear the way for the compact XJ, while the Wagoneer itself continued on the SJ platform through 1991.

XJ Cherokee (1984-2001): the compact unibody

The 1984 XJ Cherokee replaced body-on-frame construction with a light unibody while keeping solid front and rear axles and real low-range four wheel drive (Command-Trac and Selec-Trac transfer cases). Early engines were a 2.5L four and a 2.8L GM V6, plus a rare 2.1L Renault turbodiesel offered from 1985 to 1987. The 4.0L inline six arrived for 1987 at 173 hp and grew to 190 hp in 1991 High Output form, paired with the AW4 four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual; the 2.5L four stayed on as the base engine through 2000. A 1997 refresh brought a stiffer body, new interior, and revised sheetmetal without changing the basic platform. Clean 1997-2001 4.0L examples are the common recommendation for a driver, while 1991-1996 trucks offer the same H.O. engine with the earlier body.

KL Cherokee (2014-2023): the crossover era

The Cherokee name returned for 2014 on the KL, a unibody crossover with a transverse engine, fully independent suspension, and a nine-speed automatic. Engines included a 2.4L four, a 3.2L V6, and from 2019 a 2.0L turbo four. The Trailhawk trim added a low-range Active Drive Lock driveline, locking rear differential, and increased ground clearance. US production ended in 2023 when the Belvidere, Illinois plant was idled.

Asked all the time

Which years of Jeep Cherokee have the 4.0L inline six?

The XJ Jeep Cherokee got the 4.0L inline six for the 1987 model year and kept it through the end of US production in 2001. It launched at 173 hp; from 1991 on it is the High Output version rated at 190 hp. The earliest XJs (1984-1986) offered a 2.5L four or a 2.8L GM V6, and the 2.5L four stayed on as the base engine through 2000, leaving 2001 as a 4.0-only year.

What is the difference between the SJ Cherokee and the XJ Cherokee?

The SJ Cherokee (1974-1983) is a full-size, body-on-frame truck spun off the Jeep Wagoneer, offered with AMC sixes and V8s up to 401 cubic inches. The XJ Cherokee (1984-2001) is a compact unibody roughly 1,200 pounds lighter, still with solid axles and low-range four wheel drive.

Which XJ Cherokee years are the best to buy?

For a driver, most owners point to the 1997-2001 XJ Cherokee: the 4.0L High Output six, the stiffened 1997 body, and the updated interior. The 1991-1996 trucks have the same H.O. engine with the earlier body and are usually cheaper. Avoid the 1984-1986 2.8L GM V6 if you want power.

Is the Jeep Liberty a Cherokee?

In North America, no. The Jeep Liberty (2002-2012) replaced the XJ Cherokee in the US lineup and wore the Cherokee name only in overseas markets. It is a separate model on its own KJ/KK platforms, not a generation of the US Cherokee.

What changed on the XJ Cherokee in 1997?

The 1997 Jeep Cherokee XJ received a stiffer unibody, new front and rear fascias and sheetmetal details, and a completely new interior. The driver airbag had already arrived in 1995; for 1997 the airbag system switched from mechanical to electronic and a passenger airbag was added. The platform, solid axles, and 4.0L inline six carried over, so 1997-2001 parts largely interchange within that span.

What engines did the KL Jeep Cherokee (2014-2023) offer?

The KL Jeep Cherokee launched for 2014 with a 2.4L four-cylinder and an optional 3.2L V6, both through a nine-speed automatic. A 2.0L turbocharged four was added for 2019. The Trailhawk trim added a low-range driveline with a locking rear differential.
