I was doing well with slowly opening up the metal center, until it blew up on me and got too tangled to do anything with. The solid metal center apparently keeps the stranded outer portion from collapsing... But, in trying to straighten the strands, I managed to pull a couple free and realized it doesn't extend all the way through the thick barrel, so I cut that much off to have just plastic to work with.
