When the communication concerns the transmission units or body details it is necessary to quote also the transmission casing and body numbers. Car number. Stamped on a plate secured to the top left-hand side of the front bulkhead. Engine number. On a metal plate xed to the right-hand side of the cylinder block. Gearbox number. Stamped on the top of the gearbox to the left of the dipstick and ller plug. Rear axle number. Stamped on the front of the axle tube on the left-hand side adjacent to the spring seat. Ignition key number. To reduce the possibility of theft ignition switches are not marked with a number. Owners are advised to make a note of the number appearing on the ignition key in case of loss. NOTEReferences to right- or left-hand in this Handbook are made when viewing the car from the rear. C. CONTROLS AND INSTRUMENTS Hand brake The hand brake is of the pull-up lever type, operating mechanically on the rear wheels only. To release the hand brake, pull it upwards to take the load, press the ratchet release button located in the end of the lever with the thumb and push the lever down into the off ' position. The hand brake is automatically adjusted at the same time as the foot brake and requires no separate adjustment. Pedals The left-hand pedal operates the clutch, the centre pedal the brakes, and the right-hand pedal the accelerator. Keep the foot clear of the clutch pedal except when engagement or disengagement of any gear is intended, or when in heavy trafc. Driving with the foot resting on the pedal will lead to rapid clutch wear. Gear lever The four forward gears and the reverse gear are engaged by moving the lever to the positions illustrated. To engage reverse gear move the lever to the left of the neutral position until resistance is felt, apply side pressure to the lever to overcome resistance and then pull it backwards to engage the gear. Synchromesh engagement is provided on second, third and fourth gears. Always ensure that the gear lever is in the neutral position before attempting to start the engine. Horn switch . g The horns are sounded by a horn-push located in the steering-wheel hub.
