The 1969 Pontiac Firebird wore a one year only restyle of the first generation body and stayed in production well past the normal changeover, since the redesigned 1970 cars did not arrive until February 1970. March 1969 brought the first Trans Am, an option package built around the Ram Air III 400 rated 335 hp gross; just 697 were made, including 8 convertibles. The optional Ram Air IV carried a 345 hp gross rating.
