The 1981 Toyota Hilux introduced the 22R, a 2.4-liter SOHC four rated 97 horsepower that would anchor Toyota's small trucks for more than a decade. In the United States the third-generation truck sold as the Toyota Pickup, with the Hilux name reserved for other markets. Two-wheel-drive and solid-axle 4x4 models continued in standard and long-bed forms, with the SR5 package topping the range.
