Hello, I am getting a real bad thumping noise coming from the rear leaf springs.I got under and looked and could tell it was the rubber snubber hitting the front of the leaf springs when stopping. As soon as I let off of the brake the trauck will settle back down and make the noise.Any ideas???I am also getting a clanking in the front when turning??Please help it's driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What year is your Excursion and how many miles?

There was a TSB out on 2000 Excursions for the rear leaf spring snubbers...I had a similar clunking just as you subscribe. I had this done a few years ago when it first started and when the Excursion was almost new.

Regarding the clanking in the front when turning...can you be more specific? Can you tell where it's coming from? There have been a number of cases where the front sway bar linkages were loose and caused a clunking sound, body bolts (underneath the driver's foot) were loose and caused a clunking, etc.

It's a 2000 excursion limited 4x4.So, with the tsb, do I just take it to the dealer? It has 67k on it right now.Is it free at the dealer to get fixed under the tsb or do i have to pay?the clanking at times does come from the drivers side foot well, pretty loud sometimes. And others it feels like a softer thud from the passenger side. What is the fix for these problems???Thanks

The dealer will perform any TSB fixes free-of-charge (no warranty deductible, either).

You may just have the dealer look at the clunking in the front. If it's coming from the driver's foot sometimes and the passenger side other times, it may be the sway bar links.

It may also be a ball joint issue...but you'd also feel the clunk when you come to a stop, too. Since you only hear it on turns, I would say it's least likely that it's a ball joint problem but I just wanted to throw it out there as an idea just in case.

Hello! I am a new Excursion owner. I have the same problem on my 00X. I get the thud/clunk when stopping and when accelerating from the stop. I feel it right under my feet in the drivers side. Is that the sway bar links or ball joints? Is there any way for me to check it myself? Are either one of the problems covered under the TSB?

Thanks,
Jack

Hi Jack, welcome to the club!

The clunk underneath your foot is most likely a loose body mount/bolt. Worn ball joints are felt more in the front of the vehicle and you typically feel/hear them when coming to a stop, not on acceleration. It could also be a sway bar link too since it is mounted in the general area underneath the driver's foot.

You can tighten your sway bar bolts with a wrench and socket. The body mount I've never personally tightened (I had this problem too but Ford fixed it during one of my service visits when the truck was new). Perhaps someone else can chime in on how specifically to address the body mount/bolt.

The TSB only covers the rear suspension trac bar snubbers (those yellow things hanging off of the rear leaf springs) -- and that was on early model Excursions (2000 for sure).

Tightening the sway bar link bolts may not solve the problem. One end of the link is a ball joint with captive bolt. In my case, all of the nuts/bolts were tight and I still had the clunk. My mechanic removed the entire sway bar and the noise was gone. The captive bolts were very sloppy in the links. On the new links the bolts were very solid. New links and the clunk was gone.

When i replaced mine with longer drop bars my drivers side sway bar captive bolt was gone and freely wooble in its socket....The passenger side was much firmer but it was not as firm as I would have thought it should be.
