At 6'5", I find the spaciousness of this beast refreshing.
However, I have found one part on this thing that crunches me: the liftgate, when opened, hits me (or should I say that I hit it?) right in the forehead. I have to duck under it to reach inside to load or unload.
Does anyone have any experience with this liftgate being opened a couple of inches higher? I guess the more specific questions are 1) do the hinges open up a little more? and 2) if slightly longer gas lifts are fitted, allowing the gate to go higher, will those cylinders be short enough to fit in their space once the gate is shut?
Thanks much! |

Hi John, from the photo of Blue I honestly can't tell if you have a 4x4 but if you do go purchase a set of struts for a 4x2 Excursion as they'll be a couple inches longer to clear the scalp and the liftgate will close as normal

As Bill said the the 2 wheel drive X has longer release shocks since the truck sits lower and will not be hitting the rafters of the garage roof I installed them for the same reason. A note of caution though....The rear lift gate is HEAVY...get help holding the lift gate as you remove and replace the oe ones.
Mine was on back order as it became common knowledge and everyone wanted them at the same time. Should cost around 20-25 a pc.

Well, I appreciate the suggestion. However, I have a 4x2, so I guess i've got the longer ones already... but I need more height! Suggestions?
Thanks!

Stock 4x4 rear blocks are like 2 1/8""- 2 3/8" tall which might help since you're in a 4x2

Take off your shoes before opening the rear lift gate!

Seems like a crazy reason, but I guess I could always install a suspension lift kit to raise the liftgate height! yuk yuk...

Anyone have the part #'s for the arms?? My wife wants it higher also!!
And since were on the subject of rear doors, can you make the barn doors open wider? I saw on a site that it was open all most all the way!

There's a little spring retaining clip setup that limits how far the barn doors will open. Press it in and it'll come off its pin. The barn doors will swing open till they're perpendicular with the body. To close just reattach the clip, it's really simple. |
