An 1/8" might get you some clearance when unloaded, but as soon as you put weight on the OEM crossbars, they'll flex right back down upon the paint. And will an 1/8" be enough clearance to keep the crossbars from hitting the paint if they should start flapping up & down in the wind? Many X-owners have just taken them off unless/until they need them. Realistically, how many times have you seen anything being transported on the roof of an X? Other than once seeing a ladder atop an X, I don't recall seeing anything else up there.

Also, if you shim them up, then that shim material would then be making constant contact with the paint, and slowly rub it away.

that's right... the shim will just be the thing that wears your paint then....
ANYTIME two disparate parts move against one another, they will wear paint...

Our roof rack gets used once a year to haul a Christmas tree back to the house!

LANDYOT, where did you get the Explorer crossbars? Did you happen to have them laying around or did you get them from a junkyard or something? Also, which year are they from? I like how it looks and would consider doing it to my X to retain an OEM appearance.

Hey!! Wait a minute. One of the main reasons I purchasd my EX was because of the long roofrack. I'm a kayaker and carry two 15' kayaks up there. Actually, I bought the Yakima rack assembly that attaches to the long runners of the OEM rack. I've never tied anything to the OEM cross bars. The only use I have for them is to guide me in the placement of the boats. I'll put a photo in my gallery. It's a good thing I'm tall, those Yakiima cross bars are 7 feet off the ground.

Well, if ya really like them, I've got three sets of the large cross bars and two sets of the smaller ones I've taken off of my three Ex's

Eric - I got both sets on eBay. I'm not certain which years share this style of crossbar ... there are a couple different styles ... but they're the same towers that were on Mrs. Landyot's 2000 EB Explorer. I think I paid around $30 to $35 for each set.

BTW, If I recall correctly, the amount to lengthen each crossbar is only 2-9/16" ... but double-check that before cutting.

Oh, no. I don't want any more. After reading all this, I will probably remove the OEM crossbars. Yakima uses their own; and they are about 4" above the roof. Thanks anyway.
