New assembly on left, old on right. The new assembly has a little bit of a different design.

This is why you always replace the yellow o-ring after removing the hub assembly. It's a $5 part that your dealer should have in stock.

Looks nice.

Whatever happened to serviceable bearings? Everything is sealed nowadays. More expense for us. I guess the engineers feel that only a few people actually do maintenace.

I think that's exactly it -- their "research" indicates a low percentage do their own maintenance. Easier for the engineers/designers, I guess. More profit for the dealers come service/replacement time, too.

I replaced both hub assemblies on my X...did you notice a big difference in the quality of the new design? It seemed to me that the newer hub is built much better. Of course Ford said they were the same part #, nevermind all of the first gen hubs that failed!

Yep, when I compared them close-up side-by-side, there was a noticeable difference in size, too.

Thanks for the pics. I forgot about that pesky yellow o-ring. I replaced one side & the kit had an extra. That could be why the hubs don't lock on the other side. Guess I'll pull it & see if that o-ring cures the problem. Of course us old 4 wheeler's are used to jumping out to lock 'em in. Seems like I'm missing something when I just turn a switch.

I replaced mine this weeked, however I still have the noise that I assumed was a bad hub on the left side, the noise is still there and sounds to me like the transfer case did not disengage on one side, however, I havent used the ESOF in a long time, so Im wondering if somehow, some way that it got moved or something and it didnt let go for what ever reason. It only does it when Im turning into a parking spot going left, when the weight transfers to the outside wheel, Ive also replaced all the tie rods and checked the ball joints, so I know thats not the problem. Anyone have any ideas? I payed 354 for the new Timken assembly, didnt figure it was too bad, and it came with a new oil seal and ABS harness.

Sounds like your hub(s) may be in the "locked" position instead of the "auto" position. I assume you've verified this but thought I'd ask anyway. What you describe is consistent with binding that'll happen when turning sharp on dry pavement with the front hub(s) in the "lock" position (even without 4x4 engaged).
