Time for me to change my front wheel bearings and I have not done this job on a 4X4 before. I am also considering swapping to manual lockers since mine are frozen . Anything different about the wheel bearing job I need to or tips will be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Dzlin

Hi Dzlin,

The front wheel bearings and hubs are all one unit on the Excursions. Unfortunately, you can't replace just the wheel bearings, you have to buy the entire assembly. I did this earlier this year and took a few pictures of the operation:

http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/9/54748-2

Don't forget to pick up the yellow o-ring seals that I mention in the pictures.

I took videos of a ball joint removal/installation and you can also take a look at the videos to see what the process is like to remove the hub: http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/registry/9/22952-2 (since this was a balljoint job, some of the steps are unnecessary -- like removing the drag link).

Good luck!

what are some of the signs or sounds of wear ?

i can hear a ticking sound coming from the driver side hub
goes away when i switch to 4x4 high

Dxlin,
Had to relace one of mine last winter.
Was making a grinding sound. At first I thought that it was the rotor and pads!
When or if, you replace the hub assembly, be sure to get new hub studs ( hub to axle).
The assembly that I bought did not come with them.

Bad bearings in the front hub assembly can be identified by jacking up the front end, removing the wheel, and pushing on the hub in all directions to see if there is any movement. Movement in the assembly will indicate the bearings are shot and that it's time for a new hub assembly.

Any grinding sound is not normal!

Hello, first time replying !!

On my 2001 Excursion 7.3 diesel the first indication of bearing failure was noise from brakes when coming to a stop. The vehicle has a 3 inch lift with 18x10 rims and 325/65-18 tires. The wide rim and tires cause the premature wheel-bearing-failure.
Trip from Texas to Washington State pulling 24 ft. Featherlight trailer with Bronco inside, came out of the mountains, pulled off to eat heard brake noise. Reached end off off ramp and all hell broke loose. Mountain Home Ford (Idaho) replaced everything on the drivers side ($2200) at 54,000 miles.
My question: buy assembly from Ford Dealer or Ebay/Aftermarket ?? for the driver side.

Thor,
OEM or aftermarket is a hard call. I went with aftermarket on e-bay saved a couple hundred. Have about 25K on the hub so far.
GOOD LUCK !
