About the 1983–1991 Ford Crown Victoria LTD

A Ford Crown Victoria LTD from the generation archive from the generation archive

The Ford LTD Crown Victoria (1983-1991) is the box-body Panther-platform full-size Ford, sold as one continuous generation from the 1983 model split until the aero 1992 Crown Victoria replaced it. Every one is body-on-frame, rear-wheel drive, with a 5.0L (302) V8 and the AOD four-speed automatic as the standard powertrain. The 302 ran central fuel injection through 1985 and switched to sequential EFI for 1986, while a carbureted 5.8L (351W) V8 served police and fleet duty. A 1988 freshening revised the front and rear styling; otherwise the body changed very little across nine model years.

The story

Bought as a "beater" for $1000. After driving for two years, the main seals started leaking. At the same time the tranny started to slip. I got an estimate on the cost of new seals, (basically a rebuild), from the local Ford dealer . The cost was not that far from a factory crate engine. So I did the upgrade. I also got a factory rebuilt transmission at the same time. This work was out of my league, so I was happy to have it done. The only other optoin was to buy another car. The work was done in a few days and I got a warranty. It just went out of the factory warranty in May. It's nice having a new car running gear. Now I have a few problems to sort out like the instruments. I plan on going with some new VDO gauges. — raindad
