The 1999 BMW 5 Series added the Sport Wagon body to the United States E39 range, sold as the 528i wagon alongside the sedan. The 528i used a 2.8-liter M52 six rated at 190 horsepower, while the 540i carried a 4.4-liter M62 V8 rated at 282 horsepower, updated with VANOS variable valve timing during the 1999 model year. Six-cylinder E39s used rack-and-pinion steering, while the V8 cars kept a recirculating-ball setup to clear the wider engine.
