The 2006 BMW 5 Series brought sweeping powertrain changes to the E60 generation. The magnesium-aluminum N52 six replaced the M54, rated at 215 horsepower in the 525i and 255 horsepower in the 530i, while the 550i replaced the 545i with a 4.8-liter V8 rated at 360 horsepower. All-wheel drive reached the US 5 Series for the first time in the 525xi and 530xi sedans and the 530xi Sports Wagon. The E60 M5 also arrived for 2006, with a 5.0-liter S85 V10 rated at 500 horsepower and a seven-speed SMG gearbox.
