The 1999 BMW Z3 (E36/7 roadster) was a transitional year in which the US base model dropped the 1.9L four in favor of a 2.5L M52TU inline-six rated at 170 hp, badged Z3 2.3 early in the year and Z3 2.5 after an April 1999 facelift. The 2.8 model continued with a 2.8L inline-six making 193 hp, and 1999 also introduced the E36/8 Z3 Coupe body alongside the roadster. The mid-year facelift brought wider rear bodywork, a revised suspension, new bumpers, and L-shaped taillights. Both roadster engines paired with a five-speed manual or optional automatic.
