The 1997 Chevrolet Suburban ran the Vortec engines introduced for 1996, with the 5.7L V8 rated at 255 hp and the 2500's 7.4L at 290 hp, both large gains over the TBI engines they replaced. A passenger-side airbag joined the driver's bag this year, and the 4L80-E four-speed automatic backed the big block and the 6.5L turbodiesel.
