The 1955 Ford Crown Victoria was the top two-door pillarless hardtop in Ford's new Fairlane series, distinguished by a stainless steel transverse band (the tiara, sometimes called the basket handle) that wrapped over the roof at the B-pillar. Available engines ranged from the 223 cu in (3.7L) Mileage Maker inline-six rated near 120 gross hp to the 272 cu in (4.5L) Y-block V8, which made 162 gross hp with a two-barrel carburetor or 182 gross hp with the four-barrel and dual exhaust. Transmissions were a three-speed manual, a three-speed manual with overdrive, or the Fordomatic automatic. A Crown Victoria Skyliner variant added a tinted acrylic front roof panel over the front seat.
