The 1961 Ford Galaxie topped a restyled full-size Ford line that returned to big round taillights and a formal Thunderbird-style roofline on the 119-inch wheelbase. The year's headline was the new 390 cubic inch FE-series V8, offered at 300 horsepower gross, as the 375 horsepower gross Thunderbird Special, and in a 401 horsepower gross triple two-barrel version added during the year. Supporting engines were the 223 cubic inch six, the 292 Y-block V8, and the 352 FE. It was also the final year for the Starliner fastback hardtop, whose sloped roof had been shaped with NASCAR superspeedways in mind.
