The 1959 Ford Thunderbird was the second year of the four-seat second generation (the unibody Square Bird), offered as a hardtop coupe and a convertible. The standard engine was the 352 cubic inch FE V8 rated at 300 gross horsepower, with a new optional 430 cubic inch MEL V8 producing 350 gross horsepower; a three-speed manual was standard and a Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic was optional. A revised grille and updated trim distinguished it from the 1958 debut model.
