The 2006 Mazda RX-8 is a carryover of the SE3P generation, retaining the naturally aspirated 1.3-liter (1,308 cc) Renesis 13B-MSP twin-rotor Wankel engine. For 2006 the previous 4-speed automatic was replaced by a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters, and its rating rose from 197 hp to 212 hp at 7,500 rpm, while the 6-speed manual was re-rated to 232 hp (net) at 8,500 rpm under revised SAE testing standards, down from the earlier 238 hp figure. Torque remained 159 lb-ft at 5,500 rpm across both transmissions. The car stayed a four-seat, rear-wheel-drive coupe with rear-hinged freestyle rear doors.
