Backlash is measured by reading the play between the ring gear and pinion gear. Index the ring gear to one side, and move it all the way in the other direction WITHOUT turning the pinion gear.

We can see here that backlash is about .009". Spec is between .008 and .012. This is a little tight to my taste for a 4.10 gear, but its within spec.

Be sure to measure backlash in various locations around the ring gear. It'll be an indicator as to whether your ring gear is worn abnormally. There should be no more variation in readings than .004".
