rekms3gr It didn't take Rough Rider Dan Smith very long to settle in behind the wheel of the Enduro Racing Class 3 Ford Bronco. By the end of his first race in a truck, he had powered his BFGoodrich T/A-equipped Bronco right into the winners' circle at the Parker 400 in 1991. With Smith's natural racing ability and quick learning capabilities, he adapted his champ- ionship motorcycle experience into truck racing performances that rivaled many of the old pros in the class. This was not surprising to either his teammate, David Ashley, who drove the Class 3 Bronco to two consecutive class and Heavy Metal championships himself, or to his team owner, Dick Landfield, who had followed his motorcycle career for years. Smith retired frombike competition with an astounding record of more than 150 overall wins, five national titles, and the highest start-to-overall-win ratio to his credita feat which has yet to be matched. Smith's fine performance in the 1991 season earned him the Rookie of the Year award. Two decisive class wins, one at Parker and the other at the Baja 500, placed him third in the Class 3 points at the close of last seasona record which he plans to better in the coming season. Although born in New Jersey, Smith makes his home in Riverside, Calif., spending much of his time in the southwest and Baja deserts. Smith is one of the avid racers who helps pre- pare his own vehicle. He feels that this gives him the advantage of knowing the Bronco inside and out. One aspect which he feels compensated for the fact that he was not as familiar with the race courses as most of the veterans were in his fiercely competitive class. Even though he has raced in the desert on two wheels for years, he's proved that after a season of solid performances over new terrain on four wheels, the old pros had better prepare for a changing of the guard in Class 3 in 1992. tgilpl EHVuus @AUDIO SYSTEMS -E = @CELLULAR SYSTEM PIAA GE Motorcraft- ' M- 40L 99 [ESL/[5' TIUNAL d wch _ g M%Wu CUSTOM UJHEELS DRIVELINE.
