Insert the new LED to right at this height, then wrap one of the legs around the base like the old bulb and trim it to length. Wrap a resistor leg around the other side of the base, then solder the resistor to the other LED leg. You can get it nice and flat if you want, but there's plenty of clearance behind the switches and it can stick up if that's easier to do
