Fire was an ever present danger in 'Ibmbstone. which suffered two raging fires in 1881-1882. These fire carts were pulled by hand for use on small blazes. The Hose Cart, made in New York by L. Button, carried fire hose. The Soda Chemical Cart, made in Kenosha WI by Ter Pirson, functioned when sulphuric acid was poured into the large tank of bicarbonate soda. The chemical reaction pressurized the tank and created a stream of liquid. Some fire extinguishers still use this principle today. V For years, these carts were used in the fire cart races still held every March during Tombstones Territorial Days.
