To prep the old parts, I thoroughly brushed away all the powdered residue of the old foam, washed the stains off the plastic & the fingerprints off the mirrors, glued the mirrors in, straightened the cardboard, and let it bake in the sun for a few hours to dry it & kill any mold spores.
