Gladys Hampton Building the site of the first house in Texas owned by Sam Houston. This is ccording to tax records. it was The building was built in 189l a used as a hotel with furnished rooms beginning in 1910. It was officially showu as the Liberty Hotel with 75 rooms for rent on those records from l925-1951. In the 19605, this building was used as apartments. The City purchased the Old Liberty Hotel in 1967. The building was renamed the Gladys Hampton Building on November 5, 1974, in honor of Gladys Viola Hampton. Mrs. Hampton became a teacher in the Nacogdoches area after graduation from Stephen F Austin State University: She was affiliated with the Texas Department of Public Welfare for 30 years and served for many years as the department's regional director, She was very influential in having the office located in Nacogdoches. Mrs. Hampton died in Nacogdoehes on November 25, 2000.
