The 1971 Mercury Cougar launched a larger restyled generation still based on the Mustang, dropping the hidden headlamps of earlier cars. The 351 V8 was standard, the 429 Cobra Jet topped the options in its only year in the Cougar, and hardtop and convertible body styles continued in base and XR-7 trims.
