The 1984 Peterbilt 359 is a Class 8 conventional highway tractor in the model's late production, retaining the aluminum cab and tilting fiberglass hood introduced with the line in 1967. For this year engines were still buyer-specified, commonly the Caterpillar 3406B (introduced in the mid-1980s), the Cummins NTC Big Cam rated around 350 to 400 hp, or the Detroit Diesel 8V-92, all paired with Fuller Roadranger manual transmissions. The 1984 model year was a carryover, offered as a day cab or with a sleeper, three years before the Model 379 replaced the 359 in 1987.
