The 1965 Plymouth Valiant belongs to the second generation (1963-1966) of Chrysler's A-body compact. Engine choices ranged from the 170 cubic inch (2.8L) slant-six rated at 101 hp gross and the 225 cubic inch (3.7L) slant-six at 145 hp gross to the 273 cubic inch (4.5L) LA-series V8, offered in a 180 hp gross two-barrel form and a 235 hp gross four-barrel Commando version. Body styles included a four-door sedan, two-door hardtop, convertible, and station wagon across the V100, V200, and top Signet trims, with a three-speed manual standard and a four-speed manual or TorqueFlite three-speed automatic optional. For 1965 the pushbutton automatic controls used through 1964 were dropped in favor of a conventional lever shifter.
