The 1985 Subaru BRAT is a coupe utility built on the second-generation Subaru Leone platform, powered by the carbureted 1.8L EA81 flat-four (boxer) engine rated at about 73 hp (net). It used selectable part-time four-wheel drive with a 4-speed manual transmission or an optional 3-speed automatic, in a single-cab body with an integrated open cargo bed. 1985 was the final model year Subaru fitted the two rear-facing molded jump seats in the bed, a feature that helped classify the BRAT as a passenger car and sidestep the 25 percent tariff on imported light trucks. The 1985 car was a carryover of the second generation introduced for 1981.
