The 1998 Subaru Impreza introduced the 2.5RS coupe, the first American Impreza with the 2.5-liter flat-four. The DOHC EJ25 made 165 horsepower and came with standard all-wheel drive, a WRX-style hood scoop, a rear spoiler, and 16-inch alloy wheels, previewing the turbocharged WRX that would not reach the United States until 2002. L and Outback Sport models continued with the 137 horsepower 2.2-liter.
