The 2008 Subaru Impreza launched the third generation in the United States as a GE sedan and, for the first time, a five-door hatchback, with double-wishbone rear suspension replacing the previous struts. The base 2.5i used a 170 horsepower 2.5-liter flat-four and the WRX carried a 224 horsepower turbo. The new WRX STI arrived as a wide-body hatchback only, with 305 horsepower from its EJ257 2.5-liter turbo.
