The 1986 Toyota Pickup switched its 4x4 models from a solid front axle to Hi-Trac independent front suspension with torsion bars, trading some off-road articulation for ride and handling while keeping the two-speed transfer case. A turbocharged 22R-TE version of the 2.4-liter four was offered at 135 horsepower, against 116 for the naturally aspirated 22R-E. The change split the truck's following, and pre-1986 solid-axle 4x4s remain the favorites for hard trail use.
