Push-Down Shifter Installation The wells in the outer boot bezel ( F2TZ7277A) collect dirt which fills the phillips heads of the screws (55930-S2). To remove the screws, use a dental pick to loosen the dirt and compressed air to blow it out of the wells. The pivot bolt (not called out) has a 1" hex and a T-55 recess; the detent plate bolts (391219-S2) have the same T-55 recess but 13/16" heads. The link bar (7B051) simply presses onto the shift lever nipples. Do not pry against the shifter (7210 LOWER) while it is installed on the trans extension. GO TO THE NEXT PIC... See also: .

This style of shifter is known to seize & break, and its proper use isn't intuitive (despite the instructions molded into the knob), so it commonly breaks when used after a long period of disuse. To clean & lubricate it, first disconnect the transfer case end of the link bar with a prybar between the link bar and the t-case lever. The bushing simply snaps onto & off of the nipple on the lever. Then loosen the pinch bolt, and raise the upper shift lever. It's NOT necessary to remove the shifter boot from the floor, and since the screw wells commonly fill with dirt, just leave it. Then remove the pivot bolt from the top of the shifter (1" or T-55) and lower the assembly. It's also NOT necessary to remove the detent plate, but it & the shifter assembly should be cleaned with degreaser (Simple Green or Purple Power) and a stiff-bristle brush. Recently, Dorman has begun offering this shifter as 600-602; ~$90 on Amazon. The steel link bar, which is specific to the t-case type, is not included. The plastic bushings are in this kit, along with a clutch MC pushrod eye bushing.

This is a VERY common problem with this style of shifter: the boots crack, allowing water & dirt inside, where it fouls the push-down mechanism, causing the operator to use excessive force, usually breaking the cast Aluminum shifter housing. This lower boot has drained dry, but it's loaded with dirt & rust. Recently, Dorman has begun offering this shifter as 600-602; ~$90 on Amazon.

To begin, carefully cut the nylon zip-ties around the rubber boots, being careful not to cause further damage to the thin, fragile boots. Use the tabs to separate the lower boot from the shift lever and then pull it off the short end of the pin.

If the shifter is seized, soak it with penetrating oil and carefully tap it down with a SMALL hammer until it frees or fully compresses so that the tip of the steel inner shaft is exposed. Set the tip of the steel inner shaft on a vise and drive the pin out.

Clean, repair, and lubricate all parts as needed, then reassemble in reverse order.
If the boots are damaged, large balloons can be substituted. Cut a large hole in one for the pin shaft, and a small slit in the other as a drain for the lower end, then stretch their mouths over the shift lever where the zip ties were.
