About the 1984–1990 Ford Bronco II

A Ford Bronco II from the generation archive from the generation archive

The Ford Bronco II spanned model years 1984 through 1990 as a fixed-roof compact two-door SUV on the Ford Ranger platform, distinct from the full-size Bronco. It used a 94-inch wheelbase and launched with the carbureted 2.8-liter Cologne V6, replaced for 1986 by a fuel-injected (multi-port EFI) 2.9-liter Cologne V6. The gasoline lineup was V6-only, with a Mitsubishi-sourced 2.3-liter turbodiesel offered briefly around 1986 and 1987. Part-time four-wheel drive with electric-shift Touch Drive was offered (Touch Drive added for 1986), in a ladder of Base/XL, XL Sport (sometimes shown as XLS), XLT, and Eddie Bauer trims, with the sport-oriented XL Sport added partway through the run in the mid-to-late 1980s. The Bronco II drew NHTSA scrutiny over rollover propensity. Ford ended the line after 1990 and introduced the four-door Explorer for 1991.

The story

I got this one for free. It ran, but barely, it has a bad lifter. It's in good shape except for some minor cosmetic damage, little wrinkle in the fender, broken window, falling headliner, broken dash piece. Other than those things, the Bronco is great. So I'm planning to repair the motor, add some mild performance mods to it, and replace my Ranger XL with the Bronco II.
